Man (24) charged with assault causing harm following incident outside Cork cafe

The injured man has since been discharged from Cork University Hospital.

LAST UPDATE | 8 Sep

A 24 year old man has appeared before Cork District Court charged with assault causing harm of a man called Gavin Sheehan outside a cafe on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork city in the late afternoon on Friday.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Garda Joe Crowley. He told Judge Philip O’Leary that he arrested Aaron Bohane of St Vincent’s Hostel in the city at 9.40am yesterday. He said that Mr Bohane made no reply when he was subsequently charged with two offences.

Mr Bohane was charged with assault causing harm to Mr Sheehan at Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork city centre on September 6 contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

He was also charged that on September 6 at Oliver Plunkett Street, while committing an offence of assault causing harm, that he produced an article capable of inflicting serious injury — namely a bladed object. The alleged offence is contrary to Section 13 of the Firearms and Offences Act 1990.

Defence barrister Elaine Audley said that there was no application for bail at this juncture. However, Mr Bohane is reserving his position in relation to his bail application.

Free legal aid was granted as Mr Bohane is unemployed. Judge O’Leary remanded Mr Bohane in custody to appear before Cork District Court on Wednesday by video link.

No direct evidence was given in relation to the incident. The alleged assault occurred outside at café on the junction of Oliver Plunkett Street Grand Parade shortly after 5pm last Friday.

The injured man was transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged from hospital.
