Fatal single-car crash in Co Westmeath may have occurred days before deceased found, gardaí say

There have now been four deaths on the roads since yesterday evening.

A SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath may have occurred days before the body of a deceased male was found, a statement from Gardaí has said.

At approximately 6.40pm yesterday evening, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted of a vehicle which appeared to have crashed into a roadside ditch. Only one vehicle was involved in the crash.

Gardaí found the body of 47-year-old Marcin Nowosielski, the sole occupant of the vehicle, at the scene. Gardaí this evening have said that it is unclear when Marcin’s car left the road.

His body remained at the scene last night, while the R395 at Teevrevagh was closed with local diversions in place to allow for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators to be conducted. 

Gardaí have broadened their appeal for witnesses to this incident. 

Anyone with information on the movements of Marcin or his car, a black Nissan Almera with registration 02-CE-3568, since the early hours of 30 June, is asked to come forward.

Any road users who were on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, between the early hours of Sunday 30 June and Tuesday 2 July, should contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000.

Separately, in the early hours of this morning, a man in his 80s died in a two-car collision on the on the R394 at Gartlandstown Castlepollard, Co Westmeath early this morning – it is the second fatal road accident in the area in 24 hours.

The man, a passenger in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision which occurred at around 5.30am. 

A woman in her 60s, the driver of the car, has been brought to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment for serious injuries. 

The driver and passenger of the second car, two men in their 30s and 20s respectively, suffered injuries not believed to be life threatening and were brought to hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Any road users who were travelling on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard between 4.45am and 5.45am this morning who have footage are also asked to make it available.

It comes after a man in his 50s died when the car he was driving was located in a roadside ditch on the R395 at Teevrevagh near Castlepollard, Co Westmeath yesterday evening.

Four road deaths in 24 hours

Four people have died on the roads in 24 hours. A mother and her eight-year-old daughter died in Co Mayo last night when their car collided with a lorry shortly before 6pm yesterday on the N26 at Callow between Foxford and Swinford.
