Man arrested over death of an inmate at Cloverhill Prison remains in Garda custody

In the early hours of Saturday, gardaí and emergency services were alerted by prison authorities to an incident within the prison.

A MAN IN his 30s remains in Garda custody this morning in relation to the murder of an inmate at Cloverhill Prison in Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Martin Salinger, from Ballyfermot in Dublin, was found fatally injured in a cell after prison officers responded to a disturbance.

Shortly after 5:30am on Saturday, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to this incident by prison authorities to an incident within Cloverhill.

Martin Salinger received treatment from emergency services but was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is understood that the deceased was attacked with a makeshift weapon inside the prison. 

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of the murder of a fellow inmate and remains in custody at a Garda Station in west Dublin.

A Garda Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to the family of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Irish Prison Service said all deaths in custody are also investigated by the office of the Inspector of Prisons.

A spokesperson added that the Irish Prison Service “wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends”.

As of Thursday, Cloverhill Prison was operating at 121% of bed capacity, with 522 people in custody at the prison that has a bed capacity of 433.
