Man in critical condition after explosion at Cork industrial estate

He was airlifted to hospital.

A MAN HAS been taken to hospital after an explosion at Millennium Court Industrial Estate in Youghal, Co Cork.

Gardaí said they responded to the incident at around 9.30am.

The man is believed to be in a critical condition.

He was airlifted to Cork University Hospital via the Irish Coastguard Sikorski helicopter Rescue 117 from Waterford, after they received a call at 9.50am.

Cork County Fire Services were called for assistance at 9.29am. Two units, from Youghal and Ardmore, attended the scene and assisted the ambulance service in treating the man.

They left just before 11am.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Authority told TheJournal.ie they have not yet been made aware of any incident.

    Saw the helicopter make a few approaches to the hospital, given the very strong winds. Fair play to the CG pilot for doing it.

    It,seems that he was welding an oil tank at the tIme of the explosion. No details coming forth as to,whether there was actually an oil in the tank with fumes, or was it a used tank with just some residue oil which would also let off some fumes. In either of these circumstances it would not be very safe to be welding a tank given the seriously high temperatures reached when welding….
    Oil/Oil Fumes – Very High Temperatures in any combination could lead to an explosion…leaving this poor man with horrific injuries for life… Safety systems at Work seems to seem to have failed on this occasion.
