Man dies after getting into difficulty while kayaking

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but was pronounced dead yesterday evening.

A MAN IN his 40s died after he got into difficulty while out kayaking in Roscommon yesterday.

The alarm was raised when the man, who had departed Lecarrow at around 9.30am, had not reached Hodson Bay on schedule.

The man was discovered in the water near the eastern shore at Fat Head at around 1.30 yesterday. The Coastguard helicopter and local RNLI attended the scene.

He was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe in a critical condition but he was pronounced dead yesterday evening.

A post mortem is due to take place tomorrow.
