Man dies during work on telephone pole in Cork

The four-man team were erecting the pole near Glengarriff.

A 65-YEAR-OLD MAN has died during work on a telephone pole in on the Castletownbere Road near Glengarriff, Co Cork.

He was part of a maintenance team erecting the pole at the time, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident, which occurred at 2pm today, involved a sub-contracting crew working for KN Networks on behalf of eircom.

The exact nature of the incident, which involved three other workers, is under investigation, and the “relevant authorities” have been informed.

In a statement this afternoon, the company said:

eircom extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased who is a former eircom employee.

The gardaí and Health and Safety Authority will both carry out investigations.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out on Monday.
