Man dies in Mayo flat fire

A 33-year-old man has died following a fire at his flat in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

A POSTMORTEM EXAMINATION is to be carried out this morning on the body of a 33-year-old man who died in a fire in Castlebar, Co Mayo, yesterday.

Colin Gillespie, 33, had been living at a flat in Rush Street in the town for some time, the Irish Times reports.

The owner of the property is understood to have contacted the emergency services at 4.40pm after being told that a fire alarm was sounding from the top of the building, RTÉ reports.

Gillespie’s body was was discovered in the bedroom of his flat by firefighters. Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious.

Gillespie, was a son of Tom Gillespie, editor of the Connaught Telegraph. He is survived by his father, his mother Mavourneen, and his sisters Rowena, Emma, Ineke and Lenore.
