Man dies in Garda custody in Mayo

A GSOC investigation is underway.

A MAN HAS died while in Garda custody in Mayo.

The Garda Ombudsman GSOC has confirmed to TheJournal.ie that it is investigating the situation.

It is believed the incident happened in Westport Garda Station earlier today.

A referral was made to the body under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005.

The relevant section of the act states:

The Garda Commissioner shall refer to the Ombudsman Commission any matter that appears to the Garda Commissioner to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.
