Man appears in court charged with murder of Ian Baitson in Cobh

Dylan Scannell, 30 of O’Rahilly Street, Cobh, Cork appeared before Midleton District Court this morning.

A MAN HAS appeared in court today charged with the murder of Ian Baitson in Cobh earlier this month.

Ian Baitson (33), who was working as a chef in Cobh, suffered a serious slash wound to his leg when he was set upon in the forecourt of a service station in the Newtown area of the town. He died from his injuries last Tuesday.

The accused Dylan Scannell, 30, from O’Rahilly Street, Cobh Co Cork, appeared before Midleton District Court this morning charged with murder.

Detective Sergeant Adrian O’Shaughnessy gave evidence of arrest charge and caution.

He said he charged Scannell in Midleton Garda Station yesterday and after caution the accused made no reply. 

Ken Murray, defence solicitor, made an application for legal aid.

Superintendent Adrian Gamble asked Judge Colm Roberts to remand the accused in custody to appear before Mallow District Court tomorrow. 

Judge Colm Roberts granted Murray legal aid and agreed to the garda application.

Scannell, wearing a black t-shirt and black shorts, will appear before Mallow District court tomorrow via video link.

No application for bail can be made at District Court level on the charge of murder.
