Updated 12. 15pm

A MAN HAS been charged with the murder of an elderly man whose body was found at Cavan General Hospital yesterday.

Ian Harman, 47, from Mountain Lodge, Coothill in Co Cavan, appeared before Cavan District Court this morning after he was charged with the murder of 82-year-old Martin Treanor by gardaí last night, RTÉ reports.

Harman was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear before Virginia District Court on 5 July. His legal team made a request for legal aid which was granted as well as for medical assistance and for Harman to be psychiatrically assessed. The court heard that that Harman was a general labourer who was married with one child.

Separately, the Health Service Executive is also carrying out its own investigation.
