Man due in court over incident at Smithfield horse market

Fourth person arrested over incident in which three people were injured is due before Dublin District Court in the morning.

A 21-YEAR-OLD MAN who was arrested yesterday in connection with an incident at the Smithfield horse fair in March is due to appear at Dublin District Court tomorrow morning.

The man has been charged with firearm offences, according to gardaí, and he is the fourth person arrested over the incident.

Two men were injured after shots were fired at the market on 6 March and a third man received serious injuries to his arm after reportedly being struck by a machete.

Dublin City Council, the DSPCA and Dublin’s Lord Mayor called for the market to be cancelled in the wake of the March incident. However, the Attorney General has indicated that under legislation regarding ‘market rights’, an alternative location must be made available before the market can be closed in Smithfield.

The Smithfield market is traditionally held on the first Sunday of the month.

Before May’s market, Dublin City Council appealed to those planning to attend not to do so because renovation work at the square means that less than half of the usual space is now available for the market.

DCC said the work will continue for several months.
