Man gets three years for sexually assaulting four young women on public transport

Two of the attacks happened in the space of just two hours.

A MAN HAS been jailed for three years after sexually assaulting four women on buses and a train in London.

Shamsul Islam will also be placed on the sex offenders register and barred from working with children and vulnerable adults indefinitely.

The 33-year-old of Wilmington Gardens, Barking, pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault on Monday, 15 December 2014.

The first offence took place on a train on July 2 2014 at about 9am. Islam sat next to an 18-year-old woman and inappropriately touched her. She challenged Islam, who jumped up and got off the train at the next stop.

On Sunday, July 6 2014 at about 3:40pm he sat next to a 15-year-old girl, despite there being plenty of alternative empty seats, and inappropriately touched her. The victim got off the bus a few stops later and contacted her mother who alerted police.

A few hours later, at about 5:20pm, Islam inappropriately touched a 17-year-old girl on a bus.

The final offence happened on Wednesday, July 23 last year at about 6:00pm on a bus. Islam followed the 22-year-old victim onto the bus and sat next to her. He inappropriately touched her as she got up to leave the bus.

The Roads and Transport Policing Command Reactive Investigations Team led the investigation and obtained CCTV footage from the bus, which led to Islam being identified.

He was arrested on Wednesday, September 17 2014 and charged with four counts of sexual assault the following day.

Acting Detective Superintendent John Oldham, Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “As a result of our investigation the man who carried out these appalling crimes on young women has received a lengthy prison sentence.

“We take all reports of sexual offences on buses seriously and are committed to bringing offenders to justice.”
