Man (20s) shot in Citywest last night named locally

Fitness instructor John Gibson was fatally shot in a car park last night.

THE FATHER OF two who was shot dead in Dublin last night has been named locally as John Gibson.

Gibson, a fitness instructor in his late 20s from the Lucan area, was shot a number of times in a car park at Fortunestown Lane near Citywest Village Shopping Centre at 9.20pm last night.

It is believed that Gibson was shot as he sat in his Audi car behind the Eddie Rocket’s restaurant. At least one gunman got out of a van and fired a number of shots, striking Gibson and killing him.

Gardaí say that the van they believe was used, likely a Volkswagen Caddy, was found burnt out in a nearby housing estate.

It’s understood that gardaí are investigating whether the shooting may be linked to last week’s killing of Darragh Nugent in Collinstown, west Dublin.

Nugent, a 36-year-old father, was shot in what gardaí suspect was part of a local feud. That killing is not believed to be part of the Hutch-Kinahan gangland feud.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information, particularly those who may have been in the vicinity of Fortunestown Lane or driving on the N82 last night to contact the incident room at Tallaght Garda Station on 01-666 6000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.

The scene in Citywest remains preserved.
