Man to appear in court following Roscommon robbery

A man in his 20s appears before Castlerea District Court following Wednesday’s armed raid on the local post office.

A MAN in his 20s is to appear before Castlerea District Court later this afternoon, charged in connection with Wednesday’s armed raid on a post office in the Co Roscommon town.

The raid saw three masked men – two of whom were armed. though no shots were fired – steal an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes from the post office on Wednesday morning.

The office was being staffed by a woman who was locked in a room at the back of the premises while the robbery was ongoing. There were no other people present at the time. A sum of money has since been recovered.

Two people – the man, and another woman in her 40s – were arrested yesterday evening; the woman has been released without charge, but a file is being prepared for the information of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Both had been detained at Castlerea Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.

The raiders made their getaway in a green Nissan Almera car with a 01 LH registration.

Police are still seeking information from anyone who may have seen the three people leave the post office – in a green Nissan Almera, with an 01 LH registration – to contact Gardaí at Castlerea on (094) 9621630 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
