4 of a kind: Luxurious manor houses in scenic locations

Privacy and grandeur starting from €985,000.

PROVIDED YOU HAVE the time, dedication and – of course – the funds, Ireland is a spoilt for choice when it comes to the type of manor house Blur sang about in the ’90s.

If you love the idea of living in a very big house in the country, we’ve found four that are in great nick and would be ready to move into right away – from a fabulous five-bed in Wexford to a Georgian mansion in Mayo.

Enniscorthy, Co Wexford – €985,000

Clonhaston Manor, just minutes outside Enniscorthy, dates back to the 18th century and was once the lived in by the Earl of Portsmouth. Today, it’s a 381 sq m five-bed home that has retained its history and charm. The current owners, who have lived here for three decades have renovated and updated this special home over the years.

Inside includes a welcoming entrance hall that leads to each of the three storeys. The ground floor is home to the sitting room and dining room that both have large sash windows, ceiling coving and architraves. The basement, accessed from the back of the house is home to the kitchen and a pantry that leads to the hall and onto the library, office, and one bedroom. Upstairs, there are four more bedrooms.

Castlebar, Co Mayo – €2,000,000

Ballinafad House is the largest of this week’s pick of houses with an overall floor area of over 5,000 sq m. Built in 1827, this Georgian manor also comes with 7.16 acres with a number of outbuildings and plenty of luxury accommodation throughout. This is a purchase suited to anyone who wants to get into the hospitality industry, whether that means hosting events and weddings, or opening a luxury hotel.

Ballinafad House is 14 km from the town of Castlebar, 25 km from Westport and a little further from Knock Airport.  No matter what the next owner of this huge house decides to do with it, there’s no doubt that deep pockets and a solid business plan are absolutely essential.

 Castleconnell, Co Limerick – €2,250,000

Castleconnell on the banks of the River Shannon, just 15km outside Limerick City, is the closest village to Island House which, as the name suggests, is located on a nine acre piece of land surrounded by water. This six-bed home embraces a Grecian revival architectural style and dates back to the early 1800s.

Cloon Island is accessed by stone castellated bridge, and this house on it has an upside down layout with the six bedrooms and three bathrooms downstairs and the kitchen and lounges sitting up a flight. A study, a wine cellar and a utility room complete the rooms. The feature that’s probably most eye-catching is the two-storey conservatory added to the back of the house along with an impressive balcony that has double stairs leading down to the garden.
