Martina Fitzgerald named as new Political Correspondent at RTÉ

She replaces David McCullagh in Leinster House.

MORE JOBS NEWS to report from RTÉ today as journalist Martina Fitzgerald has been promoted to the broadcaster’s Political Correspondent position.

The role had been vacated by David McCullagh as he moved up the ranks to replace Pat Kenny on Prime Time earlier this year.

He joined Miriam O’Callaghan and Claire Byrne to present the programme, which is broadcast on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights on RTÉ One, in September.

McCullagh has already reached out to congratulate his successor.

The broadcaster’s Washington Correspondent position remains vacant and an announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

Robert Shortt and David Murphy were the rumoured front-runners but Shortt has ruled himself out of the race, noting he did not apply for the job. George Lee, whose name had also been put in the mix, told TheJournal.ie that the post is ‘not for him’.
