Mayo farmer dies after being gored by bull

Man attacked by animal on same farm where his father died in an accident 21 years ago

A 38-YEAR-OLD dairy farmer from Co Mayo who was gored by a bull on Wednesday evening has died in hospital.

Tomas Tierney was attacked by the bull on his family farm at Cloghans Hill, Kilmaine, Mayo, according to a report in today’s Irish Independent, the same farm on which Mr Tierney lost his father to an accident that occurred 1989 while he was out cutting hay.

Mr Tierney had gone out to milk cows but his mother Pauline began thinking there was something wrong as she couldn’t hear the milking machine in operation.

Shortly after the attack, she found her son lying in the field, the bull standing close-by, and raised the alarm.

Help arrived but found it difficult to approach the victim as the bull was showing signs of aggression towards them. The Irish Independent quotes local Mayo County Councillor Patsy O’Brien who said that “the neighbours who arrived to help had a job getting the bull out of the way to help Tomas. The bull was still vicious”.

Neighbours claimed Mr Tierney was able to talk before being rushed to Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, but was severely injured.

The victim was pronounced dead at 11pm on Wednesday night.
