Bodies of two pensioners removed from their Mayo home today

The tragic discovery was made yesterday afternoon in Irishtown, Co Mayo.

THE BODIES OF two pensioners have been removed from their Mayo home by gardaí today.

Tom and Kitty Fitzgerald, aged respectively in their late 70s and mid 60s, were discovered at their home at Knockadoon, Irishtown about a mile from the Galway border.

The discovery was made shortly after 3pm yesterday afternoon.

Their son, aged in his late 30s, was also found at the scene with serious injuries and was removed to University Hospital Galway.

Speaking to RTÉ News, the parish priest Father Martin O’Connor said that they were one of the nicest couples you could meet, and were regarded very well locally.

There was a great quality of saintliness about them – now they’d be embarrassed if I said that to them – but there was there was a good, wholesomeness [to them].

A local shop owner described the community’s sense of loss.

What I’m feeling and what the whole community is feeling is [numbness].

“I’ve known Tom and Kitty my whole life, I grew up here in Irishtown, and we’re just devastated, words can’t explain it.”

Dad killed the Mam and the son tried to defend her. Dad thought he had killed the son and then drowned himself. Full truth. Will be released soon. Mental health is a huge issue in rural Ireland especially amount these people who are seen as pillars of the community. Echos the Cavan case a few month back.
