The Mazda MX-5 RF has a very slick retractable roof

The proper Mazda experience is about motoring with the roof down.

IF I HAD the money I’d buy…

A sporty little number that has the desirability of a cabriolet but the practicality of a coupe. A car that not only looks great but handles great too and is a hoot to drive. I’d buy a Mazda MX-5 RF.

Why a Mazda MX-5 RF?

The Mazda MX-5 is the best-selling roadster in the world, and for good reason; it has an enduring design, fantastic road manners and it is built to last.

The retractable fastback (RF) is the newest iteration of the MX-5. It does away with the soft top and instead has a hard roof, consisting of a front, middle and rear section. The rear section lifts and moves rearwards to allow the front and middle sections to retract into a dedicated storage area behind the seats before moving back into place to create a targa top. It is a very slick and cool looking operation.

This means the RF has an added sense of security and protection from the elements and the cabin is quieter and more refined than the Roadster version. It feels like a more sophisticated car and driving experience.

What’s special about this particular one?

This particular 2017 model is finished in a cool Machine Grey metallic paint and comes in top of the range GT trim which means it is well kitted out and features advanced keyless entry, automatic air-con, heated front seats (essential for driving with the roof down in Ireland, even in summer), a leather wrapped handbrake and steering wheel.

The infotainment system consists of a slick seven-inch colour screen, CD player, Radio with DAB, Multimedia Commander, Bluetooth hands-free system two USB ports and nine BOSE speakers including four 5-cm UltraNearfield speakers in the seat headrests, so you can still hear your tunes even with the roof down and wind whipping around your head.

What does it look like in action?

It looks elegant and sharp and like the Mazda MX-5 you didn’t know you wanted. Check out that graceful roof in action here.

Who else drives one?

This car is so new that you will be one of the first to own one, so you will be the celebrity. Although, Mazda super fan David Putter of Orange County, California became the first US MX-5 RF owner back in November 2016. It was his 16th Mazda and his eighth MX-5.

It costs €32,995. What else could you get for the money?

Got your heart set on a convertible but need a bit more room? How about this 2016 MINI Convertible for €32,995?
