This eccentric entrepreneur wants to kill Skype

MegaChat, his new video calling service, is said to offer end-to-end encryption to keep calls private.

ECCENTRIC INTERNET ENTREPRENEUR Kim Dotcom has launched an encrypted chat service, which he has described as a “Skype killer

MegaChat, a web browser service which allows users to carry out video and audio calls, was released in beta.

The service claims it uses end-to-end encryption to keep messages secure, and it’s offering a bounty for any security flaws found.

Dotcom said that text chat and video conferencing would be later added to the service.

Three years ago, Dotcom’s site, Megaupload, was shut down after his mansion in Auckland was raided. He still faces extradition charges from his New Zealand home to the US on copyright infringement charges.

He launched Mega a year later, a site which offers encrypted storage to users. The service currently has 15 million registered users, according to Dotcom.

Last month, Dotcom took credit for stopping the attacks on Playstation Network and Xbox Live after offering Lizard Squad, the group behind the DDoS attacks, vouchers for Mega as payment for stopping its attacks.
