Motor Envy: The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate is an aristocrat among family cars

The classy way to ferry seven people.

What’s this then?

This is the rather lovely and commodious Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and this 2018 example can be yours for €60,950.

What’s so special about it?

This big, swanky wagon offers innovative engineering and a compelling concept of space that Mercedes-Benz says makes it “the most intelligent estate” they have ever built.

Any standout design features?

This particular example comes in AMG-Line specification. As a result the car wears its star motif centred within the grille up front, but the real stand out design feature is around the back.

Within the luggage area is a nifty feature: a backwards-facing rear seat. This seat can be folded open and fits small two children (up to 1.15 metres tall) and then folded away into the floor when not in use. This essentially turns the car into a seven-seat estate.

And what powers this Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate?

Under the bonnet of this E 220 d model is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 194 hp and peak torque of 400Nm. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

It has a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 4.2 litres/100km (67.2mpg) with CO2 of 109g/km placing it in tax Band A3 which is €190 per annum.

Does the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate have any luxurious touches?

Seeing as how it is “the safest estate” Mercedes has ever built, lets focus on the safety equipment. Driver Assistance Systems include Active Brake Assist to aid the driver during emergency braking; Attention Assist, to alert the driver to inattentiveness or drowsiness; and Crosswind Assist, which lessens the effects of strong crosswinds.

But who would drive this car?

Someone who needs a spacious seven-seat vehicle but doesn’t want to buy an SUV or MPV. Someone who likes a comfortable car that looks elegant and sporty and is quiet and refined out on the road.
