Motor Envy: The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a sure-footed premium SUV

Keep safe and look stylish in this SUV.

What’s this then?

This is the Mercedes-Benz GLC 220 d model in AMG-Line trim and this 2017 example will cost you €56,946.

What’s so special about it?

The GLC is a slick, premium mid-size SUV that not only offers punchy performance but reasonable economy too. The Mercedes-Benz GLC focuses on utility without losing its premium edge. It shares much of its cabin with the Mercedes C-Class and it really is a really lovely place in which to spend time.

It is classy and comfortable which means long motorway journeys are a welcome pleasure and can be done at a brisk (but legal) pace.

Any standout design features?

The GLC has a characteristic SUV front with a short, succinct overhang and an upright, three-dimensional radiator grille with twin louvre and centrally positioned Mercedes star. The striking headlamps on this model are the full LED High Performance headlamps which boost night-time driving safety thanks to broad light distribution, a daylight-simulating colour temperature and low energy consumption.

And what powers this Mercedes-Benz GLC?

Under the bonnet of this Mercedes-Benz GLC 220 d 4Matic AMG-Line model is a 2.1-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel that produces 170hp at 3,000 to 4,200rpm and 400Nm of torque at 1,400 to 2,800rpm. There is a nine-speed automatic gearbox and the car has 4Matic four-wheel drive. These help propel the GLC from a standstill to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 210km/h.

Does the Mercedes-Benz GLC have any luxurious touches?

This particular example is well kitted out as it has the optional AMG pack which adds 20-inch alloy wheels, ventilated brake discs and upgraded brake capilers and subtle body-kit all around the exterior. On the inside you gain a black roof lining, leather sport seats and a flat bottomed sport steering wheel. There are Parktronic parking sensors front and rear with a rear reversing camera.

But who would drive this car?

Thanks to its excellent Euro NCAP safety rating and the plethora of safety features and generously proportioned cabin, the GLC is perfect for families. You and your precious cargo will not only be safer on the road but you’ll look stylish too and you’ll have plenty of luxurious touches to make your journeys that bit more relaxing.
