Two arrested over fatal shooting at Luas tracks

Michael Kelly was shot dead at the ‘Dry Canal’ as two trams were passing on 15 July.

TWO MEN HAVE been detained for questioning over the murder of Michael Kelly, who was gunned down close to the Luas Red Line in Dublin 8 on 15 July.

27-year-old Kelly – who was known to gardaí and had a number of convictions for drug offences – was shot dead at Grand Canal Place close to St James’s Hospital, at an area known locally as the ‘Dry Canal’.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. A short time later, gardaí recovered a firearm from a burnt out car in Rialto. The suspected gunman was described as being between 5’10 and 6′ in height, and was wearing a sky blue hoodie with white shoulders

Two Luas trams were passing as the attack happened, and a number of appeals were issued by gardaí in the wake of the shooting for passengers to get in contact.

The two men arrested were picked up in Dublin this morning, and have been taken for questioning to Kevin Street and Kilmainham garda stations.

Four people — one man and three women — were previously arrested in relation to the attack. They were released two days later without charge, and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
