Deputy Mulherin: Website's advice on threesomes is 'far from healthy'

The Fine Gael deputy said that “healthy, well adjusted” young people were not looking to have sex with someone they had no feelings for.

FINE GAEL DEPUTY Michelle Mulherin has said that the advice offered by website SpunOut on threesomes is “far from healthy and it’s far from the direction in which young people should be encouraged”.

Mulherin has said that she intends to complain to the Minister for Health, James Reilly, over the website, which receives 20 per cent of its funding from the HSE.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, the spokesperson for SpunOut, Ian Power, said that the article was balanced and provided the positives and negatives of engaging in such behaviour, adding that “we shouldn’t judge people who engage in it”.

This is one of 3,000 articles on our website. For deputy Mulherin to reduce what we do down to this one article is completely remiss of her.

Unhappy with the fact that the website is part funded by the HSE and has its “official approval”, Mulherin said that “information is encouragement.”

“What I’m asking the minister [James Reilly] is ‘what are the parameters of this self-styled organisation? What is its motivation?’,” she said.

She went on to say:

What healthy, well adjusted young person is looking to have sex with someone he or she has no feelings for, because I don’t know young people like that, other than somebody who has had a damaging experience in their life.

Updated page

The tone of the page in question has changed considerably since yesterday. While the latest version now only lists “Top tips for keeping it safe and enjoyable”, the previous version of the page also listed the pros and cons of engaging in a threesome.
