Microsoft takes on Google Drive by doubling free OneDrive storage

Ordinary OneDrive users will have access to 15GB of storage for free, matching it with Google’s cloud storage service.

MICROSOFT’S CLOUD STORAGE service OneDrive has taken another step towards convincing people to change by increasing the space it offering users and cutting its prices.

For ordinary users, it has increase the amount of storage its offers from 7GB to 15GB while Office 365 subscribers will have 1TB to use alongside the usual Office apps on PC, Mac and mobile, costing users $7 per month.

Similarly, Office 365 Home ($9 per month) and University ($80 for four years) will also offer 1TB of storage to users.

Those who want to pay for extra storage will be able to get 100GB for $2 per month (previously $7.49) and 200GB for $4 per month (previously $11.49).

One of the benefits to OneDrive is that any email attachments you may have aren’t counted as cloud storage unlike Gmail, which counts all files you are storing.

The move is to help it compete against the likes of Google Drive, which has lowered prices and increased storage for new users. The changes puts it in line with rivals like Google Drive and Apple’s iCloud Drive, which was revealed during the company’s developer conference earlier this month.

For current users, these changes will come into effect now, while others will see the change happening in the next month.
