Mining company gets green light to go prospecting in Kilkenny

There’s zinc in them there hills.

AN IRISH MINING outfit has landed permission to commence exploratory searches for zinc in County Kilkenny.

The area has traditionally been associated with mining, most prominently in the Lisheen mine, which has been in operation since the late 1990s, woith one million tonnes of ore shipped by 2003.

Connemara Mining secured the prospecting licence for around 50 square kilometres to the north east of the Vedanta, Lisheen & Lundin and Galmoy mines, and to the south of the Rapla mineralized zone previously explored by Arcon and Lundin.

Previous drilling has been concentrated in the north-west corner of the zone.

Connemara Mining chairman John Teeling said that  the company was delighted to have secured the license.

“This part of Ireland, which contains the giant Lisheen zinc mine and closed Galmoy mine, has always been rich in zinc. Our previous drilling has been focused on the north west of the block and we have potential targets to the south east.”

We are excited that the zinc industry is finally coming back to life…this license adds to the high quality portfolio of licenses across Ireland held by Connemara.

The drilling company has 29 licences in Ireland covering an area of around 1,115 square kilometres.
