Binders and crossing the Alps barefoot: The week in quotes

“I went to a number of women’s groups and I said ‘can you help us find folks?’and they brought us whole binders full of women.”

IT WAS A week when the words that came out of Mitt Romney’s mouth confused pretty much the entire world.

Ireland manager Giovanni Trappatoni was on the defensive for much of the week, and produced some memorable quotes in the process.

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte had no problem communicating who he’d rather get his tax returns done by than take advice from Fianna Fáil.

He wasn’t being flattering to either.

All that and more, it’s the week in quotes:

"I have crossed the Alps barefoot and I have overcome many difficult situations in my career. Every manager has moments when he loses. After the Euros, we have lost only one game to Germany, the second team in the world. It's no problem." (James Horan/Photocall Ireland)

Mr Justice Frank Clarke during this week's Supreme Court ruling as to whether the State's decision to grant Ireland's second mobile phone license to Esat Digifone could be challenged: "It can, I think, be said that if the allegations which are made in these proceedings, and which formed the subject of the findings of the Moriarty Tribunal, were to be established in a court of competent jurisdiction, they would amount to amongst the most serious factual determinations made by a court in this jurisdiction since the foundation of the State." An Taoiseach Enda Kenny on a united Ireland: "There is a great well of emotion which needs to be released from ordinary people whose loved ones lost their lives on either side of this conflict. It is not the time to have a poll in a Border situation when such a well of emotion needs to be released so that a new understanding about the future is brought about. There is, however, a time and place for everything." (Sam Boal/Photocall Ireland)

But you know you cant do that because, well, first because there's a lot of Secret Service between you and him, but also because that’s the nature of the process." (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)
