At least one killed after masked attacker bursts into monks' retirement home

About 70 monks live in the Montpellier home.

AT LEAST ONE person has died after an armed man burst into a retirement home for monks in France.

Reports say that the masked attacker was carrying a knife and a sawn-off shotgun.

Armed police have surrounded the retirement home near the town of Montpellier.

“An individual, who was masked and armed with a knife and a sawn-off shotgun came into the retirement home where 70 monks live,” one source said, adding that the man’s motivations were unknown.

The incident is ongoing and terrorism has not yet been mentioned as a motivation by police.

France remains under a state of emergency following numerous terrorist incidents in the past year.
