1. US debate

The first debate between US president candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump took place last night.

2. Apple money

Finance Minister Jack Chambers said a “sensible decision” will be made about spending after the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Apple must pay €13 billion to Ireland in unpaid taxes. 

3. West Bank

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has said Israeli strikes in the occupied West Bank yesterday killed five Palestinians.

4. Childcare

 Taoiseach Simon Harris expected to confirm at Fine Gael’s think-in today in Tullamore that the party is working on a manifesto proposal to build a publicly funded early learning and childcare system.

5. Court

A former TD accused of driving under the influence of cocaine has also been charged with driving with no insurance

Colm Keaveney, 53, of Kilcreevanty, Tuam, Co Galway, is challenging the findings of a blood sample used to prosecute him.

6. Vaping

Cabinet has approved legislation brought forward by Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to ban the sale of disposable vapes in Ireland.

 Under the Nicotine Inhaling Products Bill, there will be a complete ban on the sale, manufacture or import of single-use or disposable vapes in Ireland and a restriction on the sale of flavours which appeal to children, as well as a ban on point of sale advertising displays in shops.

7. Northern Ireland

The family of Pat Finucane met Hilary Benn yesterday as the UK Government mulls a court request in relation to the solicitor’s murder.

Finucane, 39, was shot dead in his family home in north Belfast in February 1989 by the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) in an attack found to have involved collusion with the British state.

8. Roads

A cyclist who gave helmet camera footage to gardaí of drivers using their phones and parking illegally was issued with a fixed penalty notice after the footage showed the cyclist cycling through a red light.

9. Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl, the lead singer of US rock band the Foo Fighters, announced that he has had a baby daughter with a woman who is not his wife, adding: “I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.”
