At $300 million, this is now the most expensive painting ever

A steal. Right?

A PAINTING OF two Tahitian girls by French post-impressionist Paul Gauguin has sold for a reported $300 million.

The painting has been sold to a museum in the oil-rich Arabian nation of Qatar, reports say.

It had been owned by a Swiss collection.

Ruedi Staehelin, who speaks for the Staehelin Family Trust, confirmed to The Associated Press only that the oil painting, called “Nafea faa ipoipo?” — Tahitian for “When will you marry?” — showing two women has been sold.

Swiss media had reported earlier this week that the painting was bought by Qatari royalty for $300 million, making it the most expensive painting ever.

Staehelin confirmed to a Swiss paper that the painting sold for more than “double-digit millions”.

Qatar had paid the previous highest price for a painting, shelling out $240 million for a work by Paul Cezanne.
