A MOTORCYCLIST HAS died in Co Meath after his vehicle struck a farm animal last night.

The accident happened on the N51 Navan to Athboy road at Clarkes Cross at about 10.15pm.

The 28-year-old male motorcyclist was the sole casualty of the collision in which his vehicle struck a cow. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Navan Hospital and a post mortem is expected to be carried out today.

The N51 remains closed in both directions pending a Garda forensic examination. The road is expected to remain closed until lunchtime.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses who may have been on the stretch of road, roughly two miles outside Navan, between 10pm and 10.15pm last night to contact them at Navan Garda Station on 046 9036100, on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111, or at any Garda Station

Young motorcyclist dies after collision, I think would have been a more sympathetic headline !!

You’re not wrong, adding the cow bit into the headline as a bit of click bait is just tactless.

Thank you Sean, my brother was killed after a motorcycle accident and to see it publicly exposed under a headline like that would have been even more upsetting.

Sorry for your loss mate. I totally agree with you. The tone of the headline here is extremely inappropriate. When a young man dies tragically, it’s a time for dignity, not a cheap laugh at their expense.

It’s a warning to others that farm animals use rural roads too. You could be flying around a dangerous bend and a herd of cows going for milking could be there.

Jack, if you’re flying around a dangerous bend then you are driving dangerously. There are many reasons to have to make a sudden stop on a bend It maybe due to pedestrians, slow or stopped traffic, and fallen tree etc

So what’s the appropriate speed to hit a cow at? And can you honestly say that any of us drive at such a slow speed anticipating something like that. Hit a cow on a bike, you die- hit a cow in a car, cow dies. That’s the difference.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a cow, horse, dog, car, biker, pedeatrian. If you cannot stop in time to avoid a collision then you only have yourself to blame. Always expect the unexpected.

Writing and reporting standards were always poor on the Journal but recently they’ve been much worse, insensitive and shown a lack of care and professionalism.
Example: the first article on Bishop Daly’s death.

Thanks Journal for rewriting this article and removing my previous comment. This mornings first edition was probably on a par with the gutter journalism of today’s standard tabloids.
