Motorists warned of ice and treacherous roads

Drivers have been warned that the most recent cold snap has brought with it dangerous road conditions. However, the freezing weather is not expected to last past the weekend.

MOTORISTS HAVE BEEN warned to exercise caution this weekend as ice and snow will make driving conditions treacherous on many of the county’s roads, particularly in parts of North Leinster.

Counties Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Roscommon are also among the worst affected by snow and ice. Sharp to severe ground frost and temperatures of -4C are expected over the weekend, however the cold weather is not expected to continue beyond this weekend.

Mét Éireann has warned of showers in the north and west falling as sleet, or as snow over high ground. Wintry showers will become confined to coastal counties of the north and west on Friday night, and sharp to severe ground frost will set in.

The Road Saftey Authority has warned that torrential rain, severe winds, fog, ice and snow can strike suddenly and catch road users off guard.

AA Roadwatch has warned motorists to reduce speed and drive with extreme care as, despite some roads appearing clear, there is still a danger of black ice.
