Mountain goat kills US hiker

Animal gored man as his two companions escaped.

A MOUNTAIN GOAT HAS KILLED a 63-year-old male hiker in the US at the weekend.

Robert H Boardman was attacked by a mountain goat on Saturday while on a day hike in a Washington state park.

He had tried to shoo the animal away from the mountain trail he, his wife, and a friend were hiking on in the Olympic National Park when the goat attacked.

The goat gored him, then continued to behave aggressively towards anyone who attempted to approach it or Boardman, standing over the injured man until people threw rocks at it.

Boardman was flown to hospital about 20 miles away by the US Coast Guard, where he was pronounced dead.

The goat was later killed by park rangers. It was apparently known for its aggressive behaviour, and its body will be examined for diseases by a wildlife biologist, according to the Seattle Times.

Park officials say it is the only known fatal attack by a mountain goat in the park’s history.
