Five rescued from Wicklow mountains in two separate incidents

The two groups, one of which had been split up, were rescued on a busy day for Dublin and Wicklow mountain rescue.

FIVE PEOPLE were rescued from the Wicklow mountains in separate incidents yesterday, on a busy day for local Gardaí and the Dublin and Wicklow mountain rescue team at the Glen of Imaal.

One man, in his 50s, was rescued when he fell and sustained face and neck injuries while out walking with his family.

The Dublin and Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team was tasked at 11:35am and treated the man for his injuries, stabilising him with the assistance of Gardaí.

An Air Corps helicopter was tasked to his location, but the man could not be collected from the scene due to high winds.

He was instead brought by ambulance to a local GAA pitch from where he was flown to Tallaght Hospital for treatment.

The second call-out came at 2:20pm when four walkers – who had split into two pairs – had become lost while descending Wicklow’s highest mountain, Lugnaquilla.

The groups were descending separately when both groups took a wrong turn and ended up in the wrong valley.

One pair, a man and a woman, alerted Mountain Rescue that they were lost in poor visibility. They met the second pair, two men, while awaiting their rescue.

The group was located using the custom-built SARLOC mountain rescue location program, aided by the GPS location devices built into their smartphones.

The group was located by a number of team members, and were led to a safe area where they could be transported back to their vehicles.

Mountain Rescue thanked all involved in the successful rescues.
