Mountjoy prison went into lockdown after cannabis grinder found on a landing

All prisoners were locked in their cells.

MOUNTJOY PRISON WENT into lockdown this afternoon after the discovery of what at first appeared to be the components of a firearm and bullets.

However, gardaí have now confirmed that the object is not part of a weapon as initially suspected and it’s being reported that what was feared to be a gun barrel may actually be a cannabis grinder.

TheJournal.ie understands that the item was found on one of the landings on the C Division.

The item was removed by An Garda Siochána for a forensic examination following an initial examination by prison staff.

The Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan was before the Justice Committee today, where a Fine Gael TD stated that the commissioner confirmed that the object was a hoax.

The discovery was made at around 12:30pm at lunchtime and all prisoners were locked in their cells as a general search of the prison was carried out.

It’s understood that the item was found in a service area where inmates would not usually be as there are no cells in that area.
