Pictures: Massive murmuration of starlings swirls over Athenry before 'diving for the trees'

The phenomenon lasted for around 15 minutes tonight, according to local Victor Walsh.

MURMURATIONS OF STARLINGS have been spotted in the skies over Athenry for the last few nights.

Photographer Victor Walsh – who captured the photos here this evening – said the phenomenon had been talking place for around ten to fifteen minutes, with the birds ending their display by “diving for the trees”.

A crowd of around 40 people gathered with him to watch and take photos this evening, he said.

Bird-watchers will no doubt be out in force once again tomorrow, hoping for a repeat performance.
