SCIENTISTS AT NASA’S first ever public meeting on “unidentified anomalous phenomena” – more commonly called UFOs – today called for a more rigorous scientific approach to clarify the origin of hundreds of mysterious sightings.
The space agency announced last year it was analysing observations in the sky that can’t be identified as aerial or natural phenomena – a subject that has long fascinated the public but was shunned by mainstream science.
An independent team of 16 scientists are due to report their findings in a report by the end of July, with today’s working meeting a forum for its final deliberations.
“The current existing data and eyewitness reports alone are insufficient to provide conclusive evidence,” astrophysicist David Spergel, chair of the study, said in livestreamed remarks.
“One of the lessons we’ve drawn is the need for more high quality data and data that is, measured with well calibrated instruments, multiple observations, and there’s a need for high quality data curation,” he added.
There have been more than 800 events collected over 27 years, of which 2-5% of them are thought to be possibly anomalous, said science journalist Nadia Drake, part of the study.
These are defined as “anything that is not readily understandable by the operator or the sensor,” or “something that is doing something weird”.
In a presentation, Sean Kirkpatrick, director of Pentagon’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution office, showed a new video of two distant dots moving back and forth on a screen, as recorded by a P3 military aircraft in the western United States, which became three dots.
The P3 was unable to intercept the dots, and the pilot reported the event. But later analysis revealed the objects were very far away and likely commercial aircraft on a major flight corridor.
“This is the kind of thing that can spoof and/or provide misperception of both very highly trained pilots, as well as sensors,” said Kirkpatrick.
“When they’re not sure, they’re reporting it now, and that’s what they’re supposed to be doing.”
One example of a still unexplained phenomenon was a flying metallic orb spotted by an MQ-9 drone at an undisclosed location in the Middle East, added Kirkpatrick, replaying a video first shown to Congress last month.
“This is a typical example of a thing we see most of. We see these all over the world, and we see this making very interesting apparent maneuvers.”
While NASA probes and rovers scour the solar system for the fossils of ancient microbes, and its astronomers look for signs of intelligent civilisations on distant planets, this is the first time NASA is investigating unexplained phenomena in Earth’s skies.
The agency’s posture in the past was to “debunk” such sightings – reinforcing the stigma over the hunt for alien life.
Several of the study’s scientists have been subjected to online harassment as a result of their participation in the panel, revealed Dan Evans, who is coordinating the research.
“It’s critical to understand any form of harassment towards our panelists only serves to detract from the scientific process, which requires an environment of respect and openness,” he added.
NASA’s work, which relies on unclassified material, is separate from a Pentagon investigation, though the two are coordinating on matters of how to apply scientific tools and methods.
“To date, in the refereed scientific literature, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting an extraterrestrial origin for UAV,” summarised Drake.
You’d have to have sympathy for Theresa May in the whole scenario. She’s been left to sort out the whole mess while the main instigators have gone into hiding.

We love a drama in this country, there’s nothing crucial about tonight’s vote, it’ll be voted down and then there’ll be an extension, following that a possible general election and a possible referendum and ultimately the U.K. will vote themselves back into Europe with their tails between their legs. Germany 1 – United Kingdom 0. The brexiteers missed their golden opportunity last night to leave the EU and give the two fingers to the bloc.

The report that “Sinn Fein are having their say” gave me a good laugh. They have no place saying anything about this if they are not willing to participate in working on a solution i.e taking up their place in Westminster and getting their asses back into to Stormont.

Has anyone noticed the Irony of yesterdays vote, if the 75 Brexiteers had voted for the Deal they would have gotten Brexit passed without the Need of DUP votes. Looks like their vote has ruled any possibility of them getting a Brexit now, or a very Soft Brexit.

The EU will bluster about the point of this right up to midnight of the 28th but will more that likely give a short term extension in the hope that the Torys are turfed out, Labour get in and there’s more chance for a second referendum. I know Corbyn is ambivalent about the EU but I reckon he will cave to pressure to hold a second vote.

@Paul Furey: no that was an amendment to the main vote, which passed by about 50.
The amendment was that there would never be a no deal. The original was just taking no deal off the table until the deadline of Article 50.
So essentially they voted that they can never accept no deal.
But it doesn’t matter if they don’t do a deal with the EU none of that matters and they crash out.

That vote was too close for comfort. But I for one am glad that a no deal brexit is off the table. That would be a disaster. Looks like we are heading for an extension to article 5o which was prematurely triggered in the first place in my opinion. I know people here in Ireland are sick of hearing about brexit but the impact it will have on Ireland if the right deal is not found is massive. And the worse thing is we have very little control of it, other than the same control that any of the other eu member states have which is ridiculous. Let’s hope we are not collateral damage in this mess.

They do not know if VAT will be payable as UK will no longer be in EU. There said ring revenue. Rang three different numbers and as well as no one knowing, I was passed onto other sections who did not know either. Told to ring NCT twice.
