COMMUNICATIONS MINISTER DENIS Naughten is expected to be discharged from hospital in Galway today following a cycling accident earlier this week.

Naughten had been cycling with his wife in Roscommon on Monday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle on the Castlecoote Road near Roscommon town.

A witness said that the TD was at the scene for about an hour before an ambulance transferred him to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, Galway.

Naughten was transferred from Portiuncula to Galway University Hospital last night for further tests.

However, a spokesperson confirmed this morning that the minister is “fine” and is expected to leave the hospital today.

Whether or not Naughten will be in a position to immediately take up his ministerial duties is unknown.

“That entirely depends upon his medical advice,” the spokesperson said.
