'The pillars are my favourite feature': Eileen shares her light-filled dining area

Eileen Connolly has been entertaining in this area for 14 years – so it’s packed with happy memories.

EACH WEEK, WE ask an Irish person with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

Eileen Connolly has lived in her Co Louth home for 31 years, after having the property designed and built.

“There is plenty of natural light, which I feel is very important for me in any living space,” says Eileen.

This week, Eileen (@nellsinterior) chatted us through her favourite spot: her dining area.

What do you love about this part of your home?

It’s hard to pinpoint just one reason why I love this space in my home. We extended this part of the house 14 years ago. I love the walnut wooden floor, which is so easy to keep. Great natural light pours through the windows, which back out onto my garden.

This is where I entertain guests as it is part and parcel with my kitchen. This space holds an abundance of happy memories in my life with family and friends.

What was your inspiration when you were putting the space together?

I wanted to make my kitchen area a more functional space. I love to have family and friends over, so in this space there is open room to prepare and interact with guests without being separated. We can enjoy this space together.

Talk us through some of the objects in the photo.

Two out of four pillars can be seen in this photo. They were added during the time of the extension. They are my favourite feature in this room. I love my dining table – it’s wonderful to gather around and entertain guests. It’s an east-facing room, which is a luxury in itself enabling light to shine through my patio doors.

How well does this photo reflect the rest of your home?

I have the same walnut floors throughout my house, and the colour palette varies ever so slightly from room to room, keeping the whole house tied nicely together.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

I gave the room a quick spruce before capturing this picture as I had a friend over the previous day to enjoy the sunshine in the back garden. I also gave the dining table a good polish to rid it of any little hand prints left by my grandchildren!

Do you have a spot in your home that you’re particularly proud of? Do you enjoy styling the different rooms in your house?
