New earthquake, magnitude 6.4, strikes 50 miles from Fukushima

A FRESH EARTHQUAKE of magnitude 6.4 has struck within 40 miles of the site of this morning’s explosion at the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant. The quake struck 22 miles below the surface, and was registered at around 1:15pm Irish time this afternoon. The quake brings to 248 the number of individual seismic events that have occurred in the waters off Japan in the last week; around four quakes are striking the country every hour.
