THE NEW YORK Times website, one of the most-read in the world, is down this evening in what the newspaper company said was a “malicious” attack.
It is the second time this month that the website has suffered an outage; two weeks ago, the site went offline for several hours due to what the New York Times said was an internal problem.
“Many users are having difficult accessing The New York Times online. We are working to fix the problem,” the NYT said on its Facebook page at 10pm GMT, some 37 minutes after it first tweeted about problems with the site.
“Our initial assessment is the outage is most likely the result of a malicious external attack”.
The newspaper website is continuing to publish some news reports on a redirected web page.
Earlier this month the Washington Post website was hacked in an attack blamed on the Syrian Electronic Army, which supports the Syrian regime.
One computer security expert tweeted that the New York Times website briefly pointed to a Syrian Electronic Army domain, suggesting that the same group could be behind this outage.
