The Economist reports a bizarre tale featuring the World Bank’s new chief economist Paul Romer. He was recently “stripped control of the research division” – not in a row over numbers, but over words.

Romer reportedly clashed with colleagues when he demanded shorter reports and declared a war on excessive use of the word ‘and’.

It’s claimed he would not clear a final report for publication if “and” made up more than 2.6% of the text. That’s economy of language for you.
