Look up! The Northern Lights will be visible over Ireland tonight

The Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country?

GOOD NEWS, SKY-WATCHERS.

The Northern Lights are expected to be visible over Ireland tonight.

Astronomy Ireland says tonight will be one of the best chances this year to see the solar phenomena because of an enormous explosion at the Sun three days ago, which sent a huge cloud of radiation towards Earth.

The Northern Lights are likely to be visible across parts of Donegal and Northern Ireland with the best chance of seeing it taking place at around midnight.

“A bright moon will be in the sky so those in dark rural skies won’t have much of an advantage this time around but if the aurora is bright, this should not matter much,” said David Moore of Astronomy Ireland.

However, don’t raise your hopes too much. The Aurora Borealis was expected to be visible over Ireland last night too, but heavy clouds meant that it couldn’t be seen.

The last year has been something of a boom time for spotting the Northern Lights over Ireland, with the shimmering colours frequently seen across northern parts of the country.

You can keep an eye here for tips on whether or not the Northern Lights will be visible tonight. By the looks of it right now, they should be, but it will probably all depend on cloud cover.

Here’s hoping.
