The best time to protect your home is now.
We can’t help you with a shortage of slice pans, but we can help with some steps you can take today to protect your home from damage when the temperatures plummet.
So whether there’s a storm on the way, or the mercury is about to drop, here are some simple tips to make sure you’re prepared and protected.
Repair dripping taps: Even a trickle of water can freeze and block your pipes.

Find and seal leaks: Cold air can leak into the home through minor cracks and gaps in windows and doorways and even though you can’t see them, they can cause your energy bills to increase. Saving warm air means you’ll use less energy to heat your home, so you’ll save money as well as making your home cosy.
Insulate your attic: Having adequate insulation in your attic is one of the most important things you can do to prepare your home for the cold weather. Inspect your attic; if you find the insulation is level with or below the floor joists, you need to add more.
Keep your boiler ticking over: It’s a good idea to switch your boiler on once a week during the warmer months, just for a few minutes. This may help prevent it from seizing up when winter arrives.
As the weather starts to cool down again, revert to your normal heating schedule, making sure your room thermostats are set accordingly.
Water pressure and your boiler: Don’t forget to keep an eye on the pressure levels by checking the gauge which is at the front of most modern boilers. If the pressure is too high or low it can stop your boiler working effectively.
