Renting and worried about the impact of Covid-19? Here’s what to know
If you have lost work or had hours cut, there are supports available.
A number of legislative measures to support tenants during the COVID-19 have been passed in the Dáil. These measures include a blanket ban on tenancy terminations and rent increases.
Any rent increase which was to take effect during the emergency period will no longer take effect.
Any notice of termination that was to take effect during the emergency period will no longer take effect
If you are concerned about meeting rent payments or feel your tenancy is at risk, below is a list of some of the options available:
1. COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment
If you are employed or self employed and have lost your job as a result of COVID-19 measures, we would urge you to apply for the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment, if you have not already done so. You can apply for the payment if you are aged between 18 and 66 and have lost employment due to the COVID-19 restrictions.Students, non-EEA nationals and part-time workers can apply for the payment.

2. Rent Supplement
If you have lost your job or had your working hours reduced we would also recommend applying for rent supplement, which is a means-tested payment. For more information on claiming rent supplement click here.
3. Direct engagement with your landlord
If you have not already done so, you should contact your landlord or their agent and explain your circumstances and see if a temporary solution can be found, such as reduced rent payments.
4. Contact Threshold
Tenancies are being impacted by the current pandemic in a number of different ways. Do not hesitate to contact Threshold if you need advice, need our help in contacting your landlord to protect your tenancy or engaging with the Department of Employment and Social Protection (DEASP).
