So, what is ESB Science Blast?
ESB Science Blast is a science education initiative created by the RDS. Targeted at primary schools, it supports children to be curious and creative through simple investigations they can do in their school, encouraging classes to ask questions like:
- Why are you upside down when you look at yourself in a spoon?
- Can a magnet attract the iron in our favourite breakfast cereal?
- How much weight can spaghetti hold?
- Conas gur féidir leat carr Lego a chruthú?
- How does the length and the weight of your hurley affect your strike?
Once the whole class has investigated their question together, they can showcase their results at one of three showcase events. The showcase events are designed specifically for primary school children and provide a brilliant entertainment programme, fantastic interactive exhibits and a fun STEM treasure trail which gets children speaking and interacting with each other. The combination of hands-on learning and great fun has made participation a must for primary schools across Ireland.
Importantly, ESB Science Blast has been designed by the RDS as a non-competitive education programme, to give every child a positive and affirming experience with STEM at a crucially early age. Catering for 3rd – 6th (ROI) and Key Stage 2 (NI) classes, it is designed to involve every child in the class, who through participation develop crucial 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.
The inaugural 2019 ESB Science Blast saw almost 500 projects submitted from schools across Munster, Connacht, Leinster and Ulster. Will your class join them and more in 2020?
Join us in Dublin in March, Limerick in May or Belfast in June 2020.
