If you're in mortgage arrears, you can access professional help for free
Get financial or legal advice and more. It’s never too late.
Abhaile is the State-funded scheme that helps mortgage holders in arrears to find the best solution and keep them, wherever possible, in their homes. It provides free, confidential, financial and legal advice from independent experts, which can be accessed through MABS.
An expert financial and/or legal adviser will work with borrowers and their lender to find the best solution for their situation. Financial advice is provided through either a MABS Dedicated Mortgage Arrears Adviser or a Personal Insolvency Practitioner (PIP)* and legal advice is provided through a Consultation Solicitor. A Duty Solicitor and MABS Court Mentor attend all possession hearings. The dedicated adviser will work with you and your lender to find the best solution for your situation.
To date, Abhaile has helped over 8,000 people. The key message for those in arrears is that “it is never too late to seek advice”. No matter how bad the situation appears, a positive outcome can be achieved.
Abhaile is 100% State-funded. If you qualify for the Scheme, you do not have to pay anything for these services.
TO QUALIFY FOR HELP UNDER ABHAILE, YOU MUST MEET ALL FOUR OF THESE CONDITIONS
• Be in mortgage arrears on your home.
• Be insolvent. This means that you are unable to pay your debts in full as they fall due.
• Be at risk of losing your home because of your home mortgage arrears.
• Be reasonably accommodated. This means that the costs of continuing to live in your home are not disproportionately expensive. This takes into account your reasonable living accommodation needs and those of your dependants, and the costs of alternative accommodation in your case.
MABS or your PIP will be able to tell you whether you meet these conditions.
If you are in mortgage arrears and fear you are at risk of losing your home, you may be eligible for assistance under the Abhaile service. For information, click here or call the MABS dedicated helpline on 0761 07 2000.
