Oireachtas agenda: Dáil to debate abortion report and generic drugs

TDs will discuss the Expert Group report on the A, B and C ruling, and legislation hoping to make pharmacies cheaper.

WHAT ARE OUR politicians doing in the halls of Leinster House?

TheJournal.ie lets you know with our guide to what’s coming up to the Dáil, the Seanad and in the various Oireachtas committees today.

A Monday sittings means it’s only the Dáil that will meet today, with two items on its agenda:

  • At 10:30am the Dáil will resume its discussion on the report of the Expert Group on the A, B and C ruling – and continue its general discussion on whether the government should offer a legislative response to the court ruling (or, more pertinently, what should be in that response).
  • Whenever that debate has wrapped up, there’ll then be general discussion on new legislation which will legally permit pharmacists to substitute a generic equivalent for certain brand-name drugs when prescribed. Currently a pharmacist has no option but to dispense whatever drug is written on the prescription, even if a similar drug is available which can fulfil the same purpose more cheaply. That debate will wrap up at 4:30pm; if a vote is called on the Bill, it won’t be held until tomorrow.

All proceedings can be watched here.
