WHAT’S GOING ON in Leinster House?

Every day the Dáil and Seanad are sitting, TheJournal.ie brings you the most comprehensive guide to the what our lawmakers are getting up to in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

So, here is what we can expect to be happening in the Dáil, Seanad and Committee rooms today…

4 things we’ll be keeping an eye on

  • Dáil: Leaders’ Questions – Enda Kenny faces the leaders of the opposition parties and the Technical Group at 3.15pm where the issues of the day are on the agenda. Will Micheál Martin raise the Seanad TV debate again?
  • Dáil: Questions for the Taoiseach – After Leaders’ Questions, the Enda Kenny answers pre-submitted questions from 3.36pm or probably a bit later.
  • Committees: Nuclear plants – The Environment Committee hears from the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland at 2.15 pm in Committee Room 4 where the implications for Ireland of existing and proposed nuclear plants in the UK will be discussed. NOTE: This meeting has been cancelled due to “unforseen circumstances”.
  • Committees: Drugs – The Health Committee discusses DePuy Hip replacements, illegal importation of prescription drugs and other matters with Pat O’Mahony from the Irish Medicines Board in Committee Room 2 at 5.15pm

Everything else that’s happening in the Dáil

  • The Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, answers questions on his portfolio at 2pm
  • After Leaders’ Questions and Taoiseach’s questions the Order of Business starts at 4.36pm and is followed by Topical Issues – where pressing and not so pressing matters of the day are raised.
  • After that we have statements of appreciation for the life and work of the late poet Seamus Heaney with Arts and Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan leading the session.
  • Discussion on Sinn Féin’s Private Members’ Business begins at 7.30pm with a motion on education, which is mostly critical of government, on the agenda.
  • The Dáil adjourns for the day at 9pm

Everything else that’s happening in the Seanad

  • Senators begin their day with the free-for-all that is the Order of Business at 2.30pm when anything and everything will be discussed.
  • After that debate on the second stage of the Residential Tenancies Amendnent No. 2 Bill begins at 3.45pm. The bill makes a number of amendments to the existing Residential Tenancies Acts.
  • At 5.45pm there will be statements on the EU directive on the application of patients’ right in cross border healthcare.
  • Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin and senators will make statements on the commencement order for the Oireachtas Inquiries Bill, the bill which will give effect to a banking inquiry, at 7pm before Matters on Adjournment are discussed.

Everything else that’s happening in the Committees

  • Appearing before the Jobs and Enterprise Committee, Jobs Minister Richard Bruton and his junior minister Seán Sherlock will discuss the forthcoming European Council meeting on COMPET – that’s the EU’s competition policy – at 1.30pm in Committee Room 2.
  • The Agriculture Committee will discuss EU legislative proposals including regulations relating to changes in public funding rules in relation to fisheries and rural development funding in Committee Room 1 at 4.15pm
