Taoiseach X2, recycling cars and a 'dragon': Everything happening in Leinster House today

What’s going on in Leinster House? Well, if you must know…

WANT TO KNOW what’s going on in Leinster House today?

Every day the Dáil and Seanad are sitting, TheJournal.ie brings you the most comprehensive guide to what our lawmakers are getting up to in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

So here is what we can expect to be happening in the Dáil, Seanad and Committee rooms today.

3 things we’ll be keeping an eye on:

Everything else happening in the Dáil:

  • Minister for Education and Skills Ruairí Quinn will the be Minster facing questions on the issues under his watch when he stands up in the Dáil from 2.00pm.
  • Ever feel like you need even more Enda Kenny in your life? Well, following on from Leaders’ Questions, An Taoiseach will be quizzed further by deputies at 3.36 pm.
  • TDs will discus the Health Identifiers Bill which aims to give the Minister more information on health professionals. That’s up in Topical Issues at 5.06 pm.

Everything else that’s happening in the Seanad

  • It’s all about courts down (up?) in the Upper House today. Senators will debate Community Courts and how they could be used to ‘ensure community safety while protecting the due process of defendants’.

They’ll argue the case for Community Courts with reference to their effectiveness in Canada and the US and debate if they would make for ‘speedy case management’.

  • Senators can then bring up any matter they like in Matters on the Adjournment to finish the day. The Cathaoirleach will chose four of those issues to be played out.

Everything else that’s happening in the Committees

  • The Forestry Bill 2013, which aims to advance sustainability in Ireland’s forests, is the matter at hand in the Committee for Agriculture, Food and the Marine in Room 3 at 2pm. Minister of State Tom Hayes will the one doing the talking.
  • As well as talking about recycling motor vehicles (see above), the Environment Committee will discuss other EU reports on greenhouse gas emissions and endangered plants and wildlife.
  • A busy day for the Environment Committee will also see them meet Chairperson Designate of the Arts Council Sheila Pratschke.
  • There’ll be a ‘dragon’ in Leinster House today as the Committee for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation sits down in Room 2 at 1.30 pm. Investor and Dragon’s Den star Sean O’Sullivan will appear before the committee after the Entrepreneurship Forum he chaired last month presents its report ‘Entrepreneurship in Ireland – Strengthening the Startup Community’.
  • Finally, the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children meets in Room 1 at 3.30 pm to talk about the National Ambulance Service with members from SIPTU and the National Ambulance Service Representative Association in attendance.
